Interserve is leading a team of experts to redevelop the town centre for the 21st century, examining the civic centre and new library and also looking at a possible police station and health centre.
The first stage, under way currently, will consider the most cost-effective way of providing the facilities. This will be followed by further redevelopment studies on under-utilised sites belonging to the County and District Councils. These developments are all subject to public consultation; the plan is to start working on site towards the end of 2008.
Ann McLaughlan, Director of Community and Environment and the Project Leader for this Development, explained: “We are looking at all the options and possible costs. We intend to fund any development by selling off surplus council-owned sites in the town. This will hopefully result in an efficient and modern town centre where we can provide all our services effectively and achieve value for money.”
John Vyse, Executive Director, Interserve, said: “We have put together an experienced team to project manage this exciting redevelopment. Atherstone is a lovely market town where sadly the centre has lost some of its charm. We are looking forward to creating revitalised facilities that all its residents can use and where all their services are easily accessible.”
The Interserve team consists of: SMC Corstorphine & Wright – Architects; GVA Grimley – Property Advisors; The Alan Cotterell Partnership; BWB Consulting; and RW Gregory & Partners.
