Energy from Waste Facility, Birmingham

for Birwelco Ltd

 

This 26,000m2 design build project comprised the building and civil engineering works associated with a new facility to generate energy from burning rubbish.

 

The building included a receiving hall, refuse bunker and main boiler house, together with ancillary and support areas, including a transformer facility, workshops, electrical rooms, a control room and amenity block.

 

The project, which was carried out on contaminated ground, included foundations for external plant and equipment together with drainage and external roads. All of the foundations were piled.

 

The building also included two major pits (one 8000m3, one 4500m3) with contiguous piled walls and was of a steel framed construction supporting the full weight of the boilers, which were hung from the frame.
