MM102 - M6 Motorway Jct 6-7 Gravelly Hill to Thornbridge Viaduct Contract

for the Highways Agency

Located on and beneath the M6 motorway close to Birmingham, these works took place along  a 3.3km length of motorway between junctions 6 - 7 and involved deck repairs, plus full road and drainage reconstruction.  Works to two junction 6 slip roads were also included, together with box girder repairs to the viaduct substructure at Gravelly Hill interchange, which carries the M6 motorway at junction 6.  The viaduct crosses major routes such as the Aston Expressway and is also adjacent to and spans a river, railway and canal. 

Roadworks:  carriageway reconstruction to an approximate depth of 400mm and associated works such as kerbing, safety barriers, drainage, ironware and roadworks, plus removal and replacement of the motorway lighting system, including lighting columns foundations.

Bridge Deck Works:  680m length of M6 viaduct, including Witton Viaduct and College Road Bridge, on a composite steel / concrete deck slab approximately 225mm thick; 900m length of viaduct to two slip roads at junction 6 on Gravelly Hill Interchange.

The removal and replacement of all existing bituminous materials, including waterproofing to a depth of approx. 100mm and all expansion joints.  The removal and replacement of lighting, safety barriers, columns cables, plain and reinforced concrete and kerbs in the central reservation, the refurbishment of steel parapet rail component and the provision of road marking and drainage ironware.

Concrete repairs to reinforced concrete deck. Concrete was removed by mechanical tools and high-pressure water jetting and replaced with repair concrete in a specified sequence.

Steel box girder strengthening and repairs - pier crossbeams: the strengthening part of the works comprised fixing additional stiffeners inside and outside of the boxes, and augmenting existing welds at certain locations.  The repair part of the works was instructed after the boxes had been shotblasted internally and the existing welds inspected and tested.

A traffic control system and provision of recovery vehicles operated throughout the works.
