A38 Dobwalls Bypass ECI

for the Highways Agency

The A38 through the village of Dobwalls is a single carriageway road of generally low standard. Severe congestion occurs during the summer months, the primary cause of which is the signal-controlled junction with the A390 just west of Dobwalls. A temporary one-way system is implemented at this junction on summer Saturdays.

ECI undertaken during Phase 1A and 1B through to agreement of the Target Cost, including involvement in the statutory processes through to Public Inquiry stage.

The works comprise the design and construction of 4km dual carriageway bypassing Dobwalls village, with earthworks of 1 million cubic metres balanced in cut and fill, associated structures and drainage, lighting, signing & traffic management.

A particularly complex element is the design for the A390 Link Road, on 15 metre high embankments over the London to Penzance rail line. The solution involves piled foundations with re-capping beams and precast arch units.
