Reconstruction of 8km of the existing A34 Southbound carriageway comprising
-
reconstruction of carriageway in two 4km phases planing to 300mm depth with new quiet surfacing
-
re-waterproofing six bridges
-
repairs to drainage and safety fencing
In order to minimise disruption to the travelling public the works were undertaken 24hours a day, 7 days a week, with a contraflow traffic management system maintaining one lane open in both south and northbound directions and reduced speed limit of 40 mph.
Up to 1500 tonnes of black top were laid per shift with particular environmental considerations for the resident bats which live under the bridges.
This first stage of a two phase contract was successfully completed four days early to a tight 7 week programme. The second phase comprised resurfacing of the northbound carriageway which was also successfully carried out between September and November 2004.
