Richard Lander School Handover

18 Sep 2006

This week Richard Lander School, the Cornwall Schools flagship PFI project, was formally handed over to both staff and pupils.

This week Richard Lander School, the Cornwall Schools flagship PFI project, was formally handed over to both staff and pupils. The first new secondary school to be built in Cornwall since 1978, the school will house over 1,300 pupils and 150 staff with provision to expand up to 1,600 students in the future.

The scheme as a whole covers the design and build of two schools (one secondary, one junior) and the alteration and refurbishment of a further 16 junior schools. This scheme continues our good relationship with Cornwall and the Richard Lander School, a great example of modern school design, firmly illustrates Interserve's dedication to excellence in service.

The construction phase took just over 2 years and the amenities include a sports hall with modern facilities, dance and drama rooms, up to date ICT systems and provision for science and technology laboratories.  The school itself has been built to make the best possible use of the environment, the teaching areas orientated towards the south, providing them with good natural daylight and views across the valley.

Senior assistant head teacher Brian Martin said: "I know the children are really excited about the new school. The building is fantastic. Everybody I have brought here for a visit agrees that it has a real 'wow' factor."
