PFI Investments > Case studies > Harmondsworth Immigration Detention Centre Harmondsworth Immigration Detention Centre PFI Project Interserve in consortium with United Kingdom Detention Services (UKDS) was awarded in October 2000 the contract to design, build and operate an Immigration Detention Centre in Harmondsworth as part of the Immigration Services 'end-to-end' process of managing immigration. The new facilities can accommodate up to 550 people and include dining areas, recreational and educational facilities, a world faith centre, sports facilities, associated offices and a court building for hearings. The facility was required to accommodate a wide range of ages and groups of both single people and families, male and female. Interserve Project Services Ltd designed and constructed the facility, a further successful project in the custodial sector where they have established considerable knowledge and expertise. An open culture with good team working relationships throughout the supply chain was a key ingredient in devising innovative solutions to meet the very challenging programme and design philosophy. The facilities approximately 19870m2 gross floor area, were delivered in just 43 weeks. A modular building technique was used, including pre-fabricated accommodation units from three modular unit suppliers in order to mitigate risk/resource constraints. The design utilised small fire compartments and maximised the use of non-combustible materials to mitigate fire risk in use. The facility also has a 3 metre wide sterile zone around its perimeter to enable rapid access and facilitate subsequent trade/services. |
