Cumberland Infirmary PFI Project

The first major district general hospital to be completed under the Government's private finance initiative, the new £87 million hospital provides 444 beds for the local community.

Interserve is delivering services in partnership with the Carlisle Hospitals NHS Trust through a PFI contract awarded in 1999 which became the first UK PFI Hospital to be bond financed.

Design & construction of the new facilities took approximately 29 months – saving a third on the normal NHS construction time, and 6 weeks faster than scheduled.

Interserve are responsible for all non-clinical support services within the hospital for the next 45 years and have sucessfully transferred over 320 staff under TUPE regulations.

Services include estates management, domestic staff and portering, utilities, catering, laundry, telecommunications, reception, security, engineering maintenance, and clinical and non-clinical waste management.

Following early commencement of operations The Rt. Hon. Tony Blair, the Prime Minister, officially opened the new facilities on Friday 16th June 2000.
