Cornwall Fire Stations PFI Project

Interserve Investments Plc and HBOS each hold an equity stake in the Pyramid Accommodation Services (Cornwall) Ltd consortium to deliver this Home Office Pathfinder Project for the management of the 31 station fire service estate in Cornwall.

The project involved the design, construction, finance and operation of 10 new build, 2 rebuild and 19 refurbishment fire stations.

This was the first time in the UK that the fire service handed over the management of it's estate and non-fire fighting services to the private sector, allowing the firemen to return their full concentration to fire fighting duties.

All the new and refurbished fire stations include up to date training facilities needed to ensure that fire fighters remain at the highest level of operational efficiency. They also have facilities for female firefighters, assisting the Brigade's campaign to recruit more women.

The stations also include disabled access, enabling entry for the public requiring access to fire related information services.

Interserve Project Services Ltd were responsible for design and construction including hard FM, and WS Atkins is the soft FM provider for the 27-year concession period. Services to be provided include: property maintenance, grounds maintenance, utilities maintenance, cleaning, waste management, security, hydrant inspection and courier services.

Following financial close in April 2001, works to the estate have been completed whilst maintaining fire cover from the existing fire stations. The final fire station became fully operational in April 2003.
