Interserve has been awarded its fifth successive contract by BAE Systems to provide protective coatings services as part of the £6 billion Type 45 Destroyers programme.

The contract announcement comes after the successful launch of HMS Diamond (November 2007), a project which saw Interserve provide access, grit blasting and protective coatings services in the construction of the vessel.  Interserve was also pivotal in the previous launches of HMS Daring and Dauntless. Commenting on Interserve’s contribution David Houston, Head of Procurement, Surface Fleet Solutions, BAE Systems, said: “Interserve has proven to be a valuable supplier in the T45 team, following on from its success on the LSD(A) programme. There is much work remaining, and 'Maintaining Momentum' remains the strapline for all those involved.”

Bruce Melizan, Managing Director, Interserve Facilities Management, added: “All the Interserve staff and operatives involved in this project to date should be congratulated for their hard work and professionalism, which has resulted in this contract extension and confirms BAE Systems’ confidence in our service delivery. We are delighted to continue our relationship with BAE Systems in the construction of these warships.” Six Type 45 Destroyers were ordered by the Ministry of Defence to be built and launched in Glasgow. These 152m long vessels have a price tag in excess of £600 million and weigh in at 7,350 tons. The six vessels - HMS Daring, Dauntless, Diamond, Dragon, Defender and Duncan - are all due to be launched from the Clyde and will provide the backbone of the Royal Navy’s air defences for much of the first half of the 21st century.
