Track record results in new Indonesian formwork contract
A reputation for providing innovative solutions against tight deadlines led to RMD Kwikform (Indonesia) winning the formwork contract for the Sejorong Sediment Control Structure Spillway and Outlet Works at the Baatu Hijau project at Nusa Tenggara on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa. The company's previous experience working for Astaldi Thiess on the Balambano Dam in Sulawesi, coupled with its work on other projects at Batu Hijau for Fluor Daniel and Thiess Indonesia was enough to convince main contractor, Darma Henwa.
Two other factors are said to have also had a significant bearing on the company's success in securing the order. The ready availability of RMD Kwikform stock in the region, supported by a back-up stock held on site, plus the company's ability to design a well-engineered solution that met the technical and timescale objectives.
The formwork was used to construct the steeply sloping walls for the spillway and the main chute that tapered from 1.2-metres at their base to 300mm, as well as for the tunnel formwork for the semi-circular spillway outlets. Among the technical challenges faced by RMD Kwikform engineers was the need to reduce the number of pours to the minimum possible. Their solution, utilising the company's Super Slim Soldiers, Alform Beams, Rapid Stage and Bar Ties enabled, for example, single wall pours up to 12 metres high, without the need to resort to climbing wall pours.
