St. Stephen's Centre in Hull

The remarkable St Stephen's Development in Hull is a vast £160m mixed use retail scheme, that has used RMD Kwikform's Airodek and Alshor Plus equipment to create a 52,000 sq m, city centre shopping complex.

Constructed out of concrete on a 40-acre inner city brownfield site, the development is one of the most significant regeneration projects currently underway in Europe, it is set to totally transform the retail and leisure provision for both the local community and the region.

Built by main contractor HBG and specialist formwork and falsework contractor, John Doyle Construction Ltd, using RMD Kwikform equipment, the project is due to be opened in Autumn 2007.

The St Stephens site is the largest in the UK to date to use a combination of RMD Kwikform’s Alshor Plus aluminium shoring system and Airodek soffit formwork.  Split into two distinct sections, a single story supermarket and a three storey retail development, the efficient construction of the various sections of the build required different formwork and falsework solutions.

Covering a vast area of over 11,000 sq m, consisting of 325mm thick slabs spanning between 900mm deep drop-beams at 12m centres – in turn spanning 16.5m between columns, the post-tensioned single storey construction for the supermarket floor represented the first time Alshor Plus has been used in conjunction with Airodek on this scale with free standing legs. Cast in just 20 weeks, the supermarket slab represents one of the fastest and most cost effective solutions RMD Kwikform have designed to date

By using Alshor Plus throughout the site, John Doyle Construction were able to increase the uilization of kit, making the available stock work harder on-site. With training, health and safety, site and stock management crucial to the overall performance of the development, RMD Kwikform also assigned a dedicated customer service engineer to the project.

Housing some the UK’s largest retail names and a 24 hour supermarket, the success of St Stephens place and the redevelopment it will bring into Hull’s city centre is already guaranteed.
