RMD Kwikform formwork supports Korea's new elevated rail link

The elevated deck of the 450km FSM high speed rail link between Seoul and the port city of Busan in the south of the Korean Peninsular is being constructed with the help of RMD Kwikform's heavy duty Megashor support towers.

Around 60 percent of the system is elevated, on average by around 15 metres above ground level. The decking, consisting of box sections, is poured in-situ on top of piers that span between 25 metres and 40 metres. The project, which started in 1993, is due for completion by 2007.

Built in two sections, the first runs from Seoul to the city of Taejun in the centre of the Korean Peninsular and is now approximately 70 percent complete. The second section, running from Taejun to Busan, is just 25 percent complete although many of the piers have now been poured.

The RMD KWIKFORM contracts, which are a combination of sale and hire, have revolved around heavy-duty Megashor support towers. These are placed around the columns, with an additional tower for central support for the 40 metre span sections. Large H beams are supported off the Megashor towers, which in around the columns, with an additional tower for central support for the 40 metre span sections. Large H beams are supported off the Megashor towers, which in turn support RMD KWIKFORM Alform beams with plywood decking

The box sections of the elevated highway are made up of RMD KWIKFORM Superslim Soldiers and Alform beams with internal Rapidshor falsework to support the upper deck. The contracts have also called for the design of a number of special components.
